Reminder re: tomorrow

There is a Favors event tomorrow at AFYA — ** please note that the time is 11am to 1pm.  Wear sweaters, the warehouse might be chilly.  If you can still attend, I am sure they wouldn’t be averse to extra hands.

Winter & Spring Schedules

I hope everyone had a restful break and is ready for a Winter and Spring of great Favors.

We have an event coming up at AFYA on Sunday, January 12th, 2014 ** from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  Hosted by the Sirrot/Pucci Family: Email Ellen at Modelhands@aol.com with any questions.  We will be organizing and packing medical supplies that have been donated.  These supplies will be shipped off to various countries and areas that are in need of medical supplies – currently including the Philippines and Haiti.  AFYA’S VISION:  To make a positive impact on the health of people in developing countries in Africa and the Caribbean.  Visit www.Afyafoundation.org.  Please RSVP when you get a chance so that AFYA can plan for our project.

And on to the Spring…we need dates filled ASAP!!!!  I created a sign up — please add your name and click a date you choose and we’ll fill the calendar!  Click here.

December Update

Well, it’s official — we give in.  We’ve been waiting to figure out a December event and Holiday tie-in and I am officially beaten.  With everything else going on and what feels like a VERY short Holiday season for some reason, I just don’t see myself pulling something together for this Sunday…so if you are waiting for the invite, that’s why it hasn’t come.

However, we have a great event planned for January 12th at AFYA (see below)– so save the date and start to think about your winter/spring commitments.  We have several dates in need of hosts and when the dust settles we’ll be looking for folks who haven’t hosted yet to take some items on.  Take the month and think good thoughts and let me know when you can host.  All the best for a very happy, healthy New Year.

AYFA Volunteer day  –  January 12th  ** 11 – 1PM, 140 Saw Mill River Road, Yonkers, NY 10701. Read more and RSVP here.

RSVP request

DON’T FORGET to RSVP for the event this Sunday, November 17th, from 1-3pm, at The Fergusons home, 29 Willetts Road, Mt Kisco, NY

Join the Ferguson family in supporting the Reach Out and Read Program at the Open Door Family Medical Centers.  If you can’t make the event, the Fergusons are also collecting lightly used or new Children’s board books and picture books (please, no “step into reading” or chapter books) which can be dropped off at 29 Willetts Road in Mount Kisco from Monday, 11/11 until 3pm on Sunday, 11/17 (there will be a box on the front porch for all book donations).

On Sunday, 11/17, FAVORS families will be sorting the books and creating bookmarks for the children in the program.  This is a great activity for the younger and/or craft-liking Favors members!!!!

Thanks and Next

Thanks to the families who came to POTS (Part of the Solution) yesterday to help serve meals to the folks in need.  We served over 300 meals to some very thankful people.  Everyone worked their tails off and as always I am so proud of our kids for digging in and working REALLY hard to help others.

More pics as always on Instagram
under westchesterfavors (tell the kids!)

And UP NEXT:

November 17th, 1-3pm, at the Fergusons, 29 Willetts Road, Mt Kisco, to benefit Open Door Medical Centers’ Reach Out and Read Progam

Join the Ferguson family in supporting the Reach Out and Read Program at the Open Door Family Medical Centers.  Through the Reach Out and Read Program, volunteers read aloud with young children, help them select a book to take home, chat with the parents about reading aloud with their children and provide literacy information.  The success of the program has created a need for more books for their youngest patients, so we will be holding a Children’s Book Drive to restock their book supplies.  Children’s board books and picture books  ONLY (please, no “step into reading” or chapter books) can be dropped off at 29 Willetts Road in Mount Kisco from Monday, 11/11 until 3pm on Sunday, 11/17 (there will be a box on the front porch for all book donations).

On Sunday, 11/17, from 1-3pm, FAVORS families will be sorting the books and creating bookmarks for the children in the program.  Donations from friends and neighbors are very welcome so please spread the word – they can never have too many books!

Thanks & More

On the most gorgeous day last Sunday, a great group of families waded their way through the guts of hundreds of pumpkins to help out with Historic Hudson Valley’s Great Pumpkin Blaze — their largest fundraising effort of the year.  The kids were great and worked long and hard to get through as many pumpkins as they could.  Valiant efforts all!

Next up we have a visit to the POTS (Part of the Solution) soup kitchen in the Bronx on November 3rd.  Unfortunately we can only fit a certain number of volunteers so that we don’t overwhelm the guests at the kitchen, so the group is full, but maybe we will have another chance at some point.  After that we have a book drive for Open Door.  Details are still in the works, but save the date for November 17th.

Two little details to share with your kiddos if you will please….

1) I opened an Instagram account under westchesterfavors — some have already joined and all group members are welcome to follow us.  I thought it might be a fun way to engage the kids as they don’t get my genius emails….tell them to come find us.  The group is private for Favors members only.  If anyone has a problem with their child joining or having their picture (I never tag individual kids) on Instagram please do let me know and I will not post your child.

2) I have created a letter of proof for community service needs — if anyone needs hours, please let me know and I can either sign your papers or forward my letter.  This should work for schools, religious requirements, etc.  Although Favors is not officially a non-profit all of the work we do is for official non-profits.

All for now….oh, except, I need hosts for the following dates for the spring: January 26, February 23, March 9, March 23, April 6, April 27, May 18, June 1.  We started SO strong this fall, I’d love to be able to keep the momentum going for the spring — and I think it really helps to hold a date to hold your proverbial feet to the fire to find an event…so pick a date and we’ll find an event!

Best,

Gretchen

Last chance

I need to fill in a few more slots for the event this weekend or I have to open the event to other non-favors people to get the work done for Historic Hudson Valley.  Can everyone RSVP here (yes OR no) ASAP so I know for sure what numbers I am looking at?  Should be a fun morning, very casual, and easy with the kiddos.  Envisioning a beautiful fall day playing with pumpkins and my kids.  Hope you can join us!

Gretchen

Get in the Fall Spirit!

Thanks to everyone who showed up at the Northern Westchester Hospital Halloween event last Sunday.  The kids were so cute decorating and stuffing goody bags for the kids coming through the Inpatient Unit and Emergency Room at the hospital.  There was some great art work going on!

Next up: Join us for Pumpkin Scooping for the Jack O’Lantern Blaze at Historic Hudson Valley.  October 20, 2013, from 9:30am to 12pm.  We are hoping for one of these crisp fall days and encourage anyone who wants to come and get messy to join us!  We will be scooping out pumpkin guts to prepare pumpkins for the amazing carvers that then make them into a creepy, clever Halloween walk.  They need fresh pumpkins to carve each week and really need the extra hands to help prep the pumpkins for the week ahead every Sunday.  So come and hang out with the Menzies and enjoy a day just sitting around, chatting and scooping pumpkins.  Please RSVP SOON so I can give the Blaze lady a heads up — she actually hires people to do this as temp work if she can’t get enough volunteers — so they REALLY need our help.
