Volunteer Request from WLT

Below is a request from the Westchester Land Trust — anyone interested in hosting?  Let me know.

Hi Gretchen,
Could we possibly get put on the list for a FAVORS project this fall?  We found several dozen cedar seedlings on our property here and would like to have deer protection tubes installed around them.  And also need natural seed pods collected for planting around the property in the spring.  Please let me know.
Thanks very much,

By the way….

If anyone has a project they want to run over the summer — please feel free to mention it — it might be a small group of responses, but if there’s something anyone wants to try, we can do that!

July 4th opportunity

The Rosary Hill Home is looking for a little extra help this summer if anyone wants to do something less formal as we don’t run the group officially — they have an event on July 4th and need some extra hands.  If anyone is interested, read below and email Annie at Fetzerannie@aol.com for more information.

Hi Kerry!  It was truly our pleasure to have your group come and visit and share in some ice cream and conversation!  I will let you know some of the particulars about July 4th…  We have a big BBQ for the families and residents and also for any families that want to return to say hello.  Our residents are brought outside and have lunch under a big tent.  We have children’s games in the back yard and often need help running them.  I am all over the place and so its so nice to know that there are a couple of adults over by the games as well.  The games go from about 12 to 2 and then at 2 we all go inside for a magician and I clean up in the back after that.  Let me know if there are any people available or interested when you can.  I try and get this as organized as possible.  It was great to have you share time with us here at Rosary Hill Home, Kerry,  Thank you again for your time and generosity and warmth.  Annie

A few items of interest

Good morning all and welcome to February.  Figured I would share a few items — some news and notes for you all.

1.  Don’t forget to sign up for the February 12th event at Blythedale Hospital — the more notice the better so that the Duncan-Gutfreund family can plan and order supplies for everyone.  This is our third visit to Blythedale and it is the highlight of the Favors program for the Menzies.  Although it is often hard to see the children who are in-patient there, the event is always fun and the kids really walk away feeling pretty darn lucky to be who and where they are.  These kids have real problems and really hard times, and it can be a good reminder to all of us to take stock and get a little perspective.  Plus, there will be cookies and games….RSVP here.

2.  Just can’t help myself but announce that a second Favors “chapter” has been founded on the South Shore of Boston!  A good friend of mine from high school heard so many stories about what we are doing that she engaged a group of her friends and they are happily favoring away up there.  If you know anyone in the area that would be interested, www.southshorefavors.org.

3.  Non-profit possibility:  Leslie Henshaw forwarded a note to me recently about the Children’s Center at the Bedford Hills Women’s Correctional Facility.  Their family is not able to participate in Favors this year, but she did an event to benefit the Children’s Center last year and wanted to share the need in case anyone wants to do this project for them.  Leslie helped to provide bagged lunches for the kids of inmates visiting at the prison one Sunday.  I believe they need about 40 bagged lunches to include a sandwich, piece of fruit, a drink (no glass bottles, please), and a cookie or other sweet treat. If interested in setting an event like this up, contact Alessandra Rose (also an occasional Favors member) at arose@ccbq.org.  To learn more about the Children’s Center click here.

Northern Westchester Community Center needs Holiday help

The Community Center loves our yearly contribution of dried oatmeal and soup packages — if anyone wants to use this event idea, especially on November 20th, please speak up.  I am doing a different project this year as they really want the Holiday stuff earlier than we will do our party (December 18th, save the date!)

Email me at gretchen@essentialmom.com and I’ll put you in touch with the folks at the Community Center.

Non-Profit looking for help – The Sharing Shelf

The Sharing Shelf is a nonprofit norganization affiliated with Family Services of Westchester, which collects new and gently used children’s clothing and other basic children’s items, such as strollers, school supplies and car seats. We distribute clothing to children in need at no cost to the children or their families. Agencies, teachers, social workers, religious leaders, and others serving low income families may register with The Sharing Shelf to access our supplies for their clients. The Sharing Shelf seeks donations of clothing and basic essentials for newborn through age 18. We accept new or gently used clothing, pajamas, shoes, baby supplies, strollers, pack-n-plays, high chairs, unopened toys/diapers/wipes, bedding/linens, sheets, towels, blankets, new school or art supplies and backpacks, new or gently used children books, and coats, boots, hats and gloves in the winter. Items donated should be gently used, please no rips, tears, holes, stains, etc.

Deborah had the group in last year to do a clean up and move in to a new facility.  She is moving again (to a much nicer spot) this winter and would love our help with a clothing drive, cleaning and/or organizing help.  To speak to Deborah and organize an event, call 914.937.2320 x 148 or email thesharingshelf@gmail.com.
