** This event is now closed to RSVPs — we hit our limit! If interested, let me know and we’ll see if we can set up another date sometime or I can add you to a ‘wait list’. If someone RSVP’d already and can’t come, let me know so I can allow other families to come instead.
We are looking for 10-12 volunteers from 12:00 – 4:00 PM on Sunday, November 3rd to serve meals at POTS (Part of the Solution, www.potsbronx.org), a neighborhood center in the Bronx. POTS provides a ‘one-stop-shop’ for individuals in poverty, currently assisting over 16,000 individuals and 4,000 children each year. The POTS mission is to help individuals move from points of crisis towards greater stability and self-sufficiency. POTS performs its services realizing that individuals coming to its doors are often in need of much more than a warm meal.
The POTS Community Dining Room is the organization’s heart and soul. Seven days a week POTS serves hot, healthful meals to the homeless, poor and working poor in a bright cheery space that runs like a restaurant. Guests in the Community Dining Room are greeted by a Host(ess) and are seated and served at small tables with fresh tablecloths and welcoming centerpieces. The Community Dining Room serves an average of 425 people each day, seven days a week. POTS also operates a Food Pantry, a Shower Program, Clothing Program, Haircut/Barbershop Program, Legal Program, Case Management Program, After-school ‘Family Club’ Program, a medical/dental clinic and a mail room.
We will spend the afternoon serving meals to the POTS guests. People will be assigned to washing dishes, food assembly, serving meals, bussing tables and cleaning up. We have found it to be a very rewarding day for every family member. It’s about 45 minutes from Bedford and POTS has a parking lot directly across the street. POTS is located near Arthur Avenue and for those on the FAVORS Team that are game, we will gather for a delicious meal at an Arthur Avenue institution afterwards to celebrate our afternoon of hard work.
