September 16 – Westchester Land Trust

Sunday September 16th, 2012 1:00 PM

On September 16th, from 1-3pm, we will be working with the Westchester Land Trust at their office site. Location: Westchester Land Trust, 403 Harris Road, Bedford Hills NY 10507.  Phone 914.241.6346, or visit www.westchesterlandtrust.org.

Here’s the project description from WLT:

We have embarked on an effort toward making Sugar Hill Farm an example of things homeowners can do to manage their landscapes in a more naturalistic and environmentally sensitive way.  We will work to protect young conifer seedlings from deer so the cedars and other young trees will survive the winter and eventually grow to become an important feature in our meadow, we’ll collect seed heads of a variety of grasses for storage through the winter and planting next spring to provide food for sparrows and other seed-eating birds, and if we have a family or two dressed for a mess, we’ll harvest fruit from pokeweed (a vitally important food plant for butterflies and other wildlife) and run the berries through a blender to clean the seeds for planting. (Otherwise, the seeds are only available for growing into new plants if they have first passed through the digestive system of a bird or other animal.)

Hope to see you all there for a great back to fall Favors session!

* Bring work gloves if you have them.  Boots or sneakers and long pants are recommended.
